Artificial intelligence in university teaching

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) pose significant challenges to university teaching. There is a broad presumption that AI tools will have a significant impact on how universities teach and learn in the future. It is therefore of great importance to realise the full potential of AI applications to improve teaching and support teaching and learning. At the same time, the associated challenges and problems must also be reflected upon.

On this website you will find comprehensive information on the topic of "AI in teaching". The aim is to provide a broad perspective by giving you access to different experiences and practices in dealing with AI in teaching. First of all, you will find further information from the University of Jena, such as details on events on the topic or on AI applications and examination law, as well as relevant contact details of relevant contact persons. Then you will find information from other universities and organisations: events relevant to the topic, guidelines for the responsible use of AI tools as well as links to interesting application examples for AI tools or practical tips for their use in teaching and studying.

News

  • To address the use of AI in teaching and the development of university-wide standards, the working group "AI in Teaching" was founded by the Academy for Teaching Development. This working group was opened to other university members and works under the leadership of the Vice President for Digitisation, Prof. Dr. Christoph Steinbeck.  You can find more information about the work results of this AG on this page or by e-mail.
  • Information on examination law: Even though examination regulations do not yet explicitly regulate or separately sanction the use of ChatGPT and other bots (hereinafter referred to as "ChatGPT" or "AI") by students during examinations, such use is currently not permitted at our university from the perspective of examination law.
Examiners currently have two options for dealing with the use of AI during examinations:

1. enabling the use of AI in the context of examinations. In this case, the examiner must explicitly allow AI as an aid. Students must then indicate the use of e.g. ChatGPT for the examination performance.
2. no permission to use ChatGPT or other AI applications. As above, this is in line with the current applicable legal regulations. As unauthorised use cannot be proven afterwards, it is recommended to test the exams for cheating possibilities in advance to avoid cheating.

Further information can be found in a joint letter sent by the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and the Vice-President for Digitisation to all lecturers at the university by e-mail.
